The Arthritis Research Unit (ARU) seeks to explore how common forms of arthritis and autoimmune diseases occur and seek new or improved approaches to manage our patients with these conditions. Our research spans from basic mechanisms at the cell and molecule level, to clinical research involving patients with arthritis and autoimmune diseases, to how complex organisations like hospitals can best manage the care of patients with chronic diseases such as arthritis.
Major projects include:
• Role of mast-cell derived tryptases in articular cartilage breakdown.
• Assessment of urinary metabolite levels as a measure of arthritis and autoimmune disease activity.
• Outcome measures and patient quality of life in systemic lupus erythematosus
• Systemic sclerosis pathogenesis and quality of life studies, pulmonary artery hypertension in systemic sclerosis
The use of information and communication technologies to support effective work practice innovation in the health sector. For example, incorporating patient self-report questionnaires of rheumatoid arthritis disease activity in the routine assessment of patient data with the view to identifying severe long-term rheumatoid arthritis outcomes such as work disability and premature mortality.
